Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother - the physical, emotional, psychological, and social changes that occur as a woman transitions into motherhood.

The term "matrescence" was coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970's to describe the transformative process of becoming a mother. It parallels the concept of adolescence.

Women often experience a shift in their sense of self, as they reconcile their new role as a mother with their previous identities, leading to a redefinition of their personal and social identities.

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding involve substantial hormonal fluctuations that impact a woman's body and emotions, contributing to the matrescence experience. Matrescence is also about adapting to new social roles and expectations, navigating our relationships with partners, family, friends, as well as society at large.

Matrescence is not confined to the early stages of motherhood; it can be a lifelong process as mothers continue to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of their children and their own personal growth.

When I discovered this term, I felt such relief knowing there was a reason I felt so disjointed in my role as a mother. Making art has helped me feel more calm and able to better recognise my emotions, which in turn has allowed me to feel like myself again.
